Elder Care

Elder Abuse Prevention and Detection

Every year, an estimated 2.1 million older Americans are victims of physical, psychological, financial or other forms of abuse and neglect. These abuses occur in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. More than half a million reports of abuse against elderly Americans reach authorities every year, and millions more cases go unreported.

The eldest of our seniors, 80 years and older are abused and neglected at 2 – 3 times the proportion of all other senior citizens.

As elders become more physically frail, they are less able to stand up to bullying and or fight back if attacked. They may not see or hear as well or think as clearly as they used to, leaving openings for unscrupulous people to take advantage of them. Mental or physical ailments may make them more trying companions for the people who live with them.

By 2030, there will be approximately 72.1 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. People 65+ represented 12.4% of the population in the year 2000 but are expected to grow to be 19% of the population by 2030.
